INTUSSUSCEPTION

Overview
A section of bowel folds into an adjacent segment, creating obstruction and cutting off blood supply.

Causes
• Viral infections
• Lead points (polyps/tumors)
• Idiopathic in children

Symptoms
• Sudden abdominal pain
• “Currant jelly” stool
• Vomiting
• Lethargy

Diagnosis
• Ultrasound (target sign)

Treatment
• Air/barium enema
• Surgery if unsuccessful
