Overview
A birth defect where the colon lacks enteric nerve cells, causing failure of peristalsis and obstruction.

Symptoms
• Severe constipation
• Failure to pass meconium (infants)
• Distension
• Vomiting
• Poor feeding
• Chronic constipation in adults

Diagnosis
• Rectal biopsy (gold standard)
• Contrast enema
• Anorectal manometry

Treatment
• Surgical removal of affected bowel
• Pull-through procedures

Self-Management
Long-term tracking of stool patterns, diet, and symptoms helps after surgery.
