WHIPPLE’S DISEASE

Overview
A systemic infection by Tropheryma whipplei. Affects the small intestine, joints, brain, heart, and lungs.

Symptoms
• Chronic diarrhea
• Steatorrhea
• Weight loss
• Joint pain
• Fatigue
• Skin darkening
• Neurologic symptoms

Diagnosis
• Small intestine biopsy (PAS-positive macrophages)
• PCR testing

Treatment
• Long-term antibiotics (≥1 year)
• Nutritional therapy
