Overview
Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome occurs when the duodenum becomes compressed between the aorta and the SMA, narrowing blood flow and blocking digestion.

Causes
• Rapid weight loss
• Eating disorders
• Chronic illness
• Congenital anatomy
• Trauma

Symptoms
• Post-meal pain
• Early satiety
• Nausea/vomiting
• Bloating
• Weight loss
• Relief when knees are drawn to chest

Diagnosis
• CT angiography
• Upper GI series
• Endoscopy

Treatment
• Nutritional rehabilitation
• Postural changes
• Feeding tubes (severe)
• Surgery (duodenojejunostomy)
